NHS treatment is provided to those who require orthodontic care in order to improve their dental health. It is not intended for people who are seeking orthodontics for cosmetic reasons.
The NHS provide us with a list of criteria you must meet in order to qualify for funded treatment. This is called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and is the same system used by every orthodontist in the UK. During your initial consultation, we will assess your smile against the IOTN grading system to determine whether or not you are eligible for NHS treatment.
If your case is borderline, we may need to look at your records before deciding if you are eligible for NHS funding.
NHS treatment for children
Should they meet the criteria, free NHS treatment is available to under 18s who require orthodontic treatment for dental health reasons. For under 18s who are keen to have treatment but do not meet the NHS criteria, we offer a self funded package using NHS style braces. More information can be found in our Fee Guide.
NHS treatment for adults
Should they meet the IOTN criteria, adults are also eligible for NHS treatment to improve their oral health. Adults who are exempt from dental charges will not be expected to contribute to the cost of treatment. If you do normally pay for dental treatment, the NHS requires you to pay a percentage towards your orthodontic work; approximately £390. I meet the criteria for NHS treatment. What happens now?
We will send your dental records to the NHS in order to secure funding. This process can take a few months.
NHS braces are cost effective and efficient; they are made of stainless steel, are fixed, and stay in place all the time. If you are looking for a discreet, cosmetic appliance, these are available but only through undergoing private treatment. We will take you through all of your options during your free consultation.
